Choosing Paper Weight for Winter Wedding Invitations

Winter weddings ask a different question of stationery. The season brings candlelit venues, heavier textiles and guests arriving from the cold, and the invitation is the first tactile promise of the evening. At our New York studio, the conversation almost always begins with paper weight. A sheet that feels substantial in the hand signals intention before a single word is read. Luxury invitations typically sit between 300 and 600 gsm, and the right choice depends on whether the design relies on one impression or layered elements such as a belly band, a pocket fold or a vellum overlay. A heavier stock also resists warping under letterpress pressure, which matters when a design carries fine lines or a deep emboss.

Fiber content shapes both appearance and impression. Cotton-based papers hold a letterpress impression with crisp edges and a soft, lived-in depth, while smoother wood-pulp stocks suit foil stamping, where an even surface keeps metallic color bright. Deckle edges, uncoated textures and softly felted finishes read as warm under lamplight, which is why we often recommend them for evening ceremonies. Test any paper with the actual ink or foil before committing. A dense cotton absorbs ink differently than a coated sheet, and a color that looks rich on screen can read muted against a warm ivory base.

Letterpress is about pressure, and pressure is a design decision. A light impression keeps typography quiet and modern, the right register for a loft ceremony or a city rooftop. A deeper bite, often paired with a hand-inked plate, creates a tactile hierarchy that guests notice with their fingertips. Foil stamping adds a second layer of luxury but needs a stable base: very thin paper can dimple, and a hairline script may fill in on an uncoated surface. Embossing performs best on the heavier end of the range, where the raised form holds its shape through years of handling. Always request a proof on the exact stock and review it in both daylight and warm evening light.
